Why buy new when sharpening is so much less expensivve? Most sharpening starts at $.30 per tooth. Triple chip blades slightly higher. Quantity discounts are available upon request.
1. Each blade is first cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner then polished. A clean blade has less drag when cutting.
2. We carefully sharpen the face of each tooth. We match existing angles and bevels, and we inspect for missing carbide.
3. We carefully sharpen the top of each tooth. We start by checking to see if all the teeth are the same height. They should be within a couple thousandths measured with a dial indicator.
4. Finally we repackage. If cases are not included, we dip in wax to protect the tips.
Finding a chisel you really like is difficult. Most home improvement stores only stock cheap ones, and the really nice chisels only seem to be available on line. If you have a favorite, we will treat it with care!
We don't know which type of sharpening is better, hollow or flat. We can do either, so tell us your preferred way. Most chisels are only $5.00 for flat grinding.
We start each chisel by making sure the flat side is flat and smooth. It should be glossy so it can slide through the board. Then we work on the bevel side. A chisel should be as sharp as a razor to easily slice through your board.
Forstner bit is probably the proper name, but they are sometimes called multi spur bits, and some old boat builders would call them batten cutters. Whichever you call them we can sharpen them.
There are several different styles of these bits. Some have a point in the center, others have a screw to help pull the bit through the wood. They all work on similar principles. They cut cleanly because the outside teeth scribe the circle and the main teeth cut the hole.
Yes they are! Some are more than $20 each. However we can sharpen them for less than half the cost to replace. They will cost between $5.00 and $10.00 to sharpen.
Just when you are finishing your furniture project, your router bit starts to burn your wood. What should you do? We can help. We sharpen router bits and bring them back to life.
Yes they will be a little smaller. When we sharpen a router bit we take a small pass off the face of the bit. The outside edge is tapered to give relief. So it will become a small fraction of an inch smaller. It will be difficult to measure the change however.
Yes they are. Many router bits are over $20 each. We will handle them with care. We sharpen alternate sides to prevent heat build up. We can sharpen straight flute router bits for between $5.00 and $10.00 each. Let us rescue your bits to cut again.
I really don't know. I keep learning that there is another style of drill bit that I have not seen before. But that does not mean that your bit cannot be sharpened. All drill bits cut because of common principles. Since we understand those principles we can sharpen your bits.
Twist bits are the most common drill bit today. They range from less than .05 inch to several inches in diameter. The tiny bits are usually too fragile to sharpen, but when they are 3/16ths of an inch, we can sharpen them easily. Sharpening runs from $.25 to $3.00 as the bits get larger. We currently can only sharpen to about 1.5 inches in diameter.
Brad point and spade bits are designed to cut wood and soft composites. The point on the edge needs to cut the circle so the center can remove the chips. Brad points are given special care and are hand filed. Spade bits are ground and sometimes get slightly smaller in diameter because of the taper as it gets shorter. Spade bits are usually less than $1.00 to sharpen in quantity. Brad point bit pricing will depend on condition.
These are different lengths of the same type of drill bit. Auger bits are designed to drill relatively deep holes in wood. Sometimes the depth of the hole can be six to ten times the diameter of the hole. The screw in the center of the bit helps pull the bit through the wood. We sharpen the cutting blade of the bit and refresh the screw to make it cut again. Most auger bits cost between $5.00 and $10.00 to sharpen.
We sharpen metal bits too. My first factory job was drilling stainless steel strips, and my boss expected 600 holes per hour. I learned that the only way to achieve my rate was to learn how to sharpen my drill bits.
Power planers start at about 3 inches and keep on getting wider. Smaller units move across the wood while larger machines feed the wood through the planer. The blades have similar sharpening requirements. The blades should be as sharp as a knife, and they need to be straight. We can sharpen planer blades up to 18 inches long. We estimate the cost of sharpening to be between $.50 and $1.00 per inch of blade.
Yes it is. But the blades are remarkably similar. Most jointer blades are between 4 inches and 8 inches long. They also cost between $.50 and $1.00 per inch to sharpen.
We sharp hand planes blade too. We flatten and bevel plane blades with care. Each will be hand finished. We can micro bevel upon request. If you do not want a straight flat blade we can introduce a small amount of radius to prevent the corners from catching. Prices start at $5.00
Just like carbide saw blades, Carbide Hole Saws stay sharp much longer than standard hole saws do. But when they get dull they cost more to replace. Fortunately the are economical to sharpen. We sharpen carbide hole saws only with diamond wheels. The price to sharpen a carbide hole saw starts at $5.00 with quantity discounts available for identical hole saws.
We can sharpen your hole saw too, provided there are teeth left to sharpen.. The cost difference is not as striking as with carbide hole saws but we can sharpen for about half the replacement cost.
Does your favorite old hand saw not seem to cut easily any more? We will still hand file your saw. We clean each saw then check the teeth to see if all the teeth are the same height. If not we joint the saw. Then we file each tooth. After filing we check the set. We gently add set if needed. Cutting with a sharp saw should bring a smile.
The Golden Age of hand saws was between the World Wars. Disston and Atkins were two of the largest companies. They each made a variety of specialty saws. Disston in particular had patents on the alloy of steel and the method of grinding. Universal electricity spelled the end to hand saws , but there is still application in our more modern shops.
There are many manufacturers today that make hand saws. Several Scandinavian manufacturers are very good. Most of the mass market hand saws are not nearly as good as a classic saw from 75 years ago.
We will sharpen your saw regardless of age. Most saw sharpening starts at $15 per saw.
There are lots of tools woodworkers and metal workers use. Lathe tools need a sharp edge. Draw knives, carving tools, and countersinks can all be sharpened. Not on the list? Send us a note. We love a challenge.
